The fragrance

In November 2015 a friend asked me to capture the scent of melancholy, citing the article The Case for Melancholy from The New York Times. The article mentioned fragrance notes of ennui, reflection, and rain-damp windowsills infused with decaying roses. I drew on my own experience of saudade as I worked on countless compositions in celebration of longing. A year later I presented my friend with her sample of Iota: “I love it.”

Iota is a melancholy nostalgia for something that perhaps has not even happened. Inspired by The Hope Blister, this natural perfume is a reminder of when one’s heart keeps breaking and rebuilding itself. The beauty of narcissus and boronia yields to vegetal musk and where the ocean shore meets the forest’s edge.

Inspired by The Hope Blister

The Hope Blister were an ambient band, composed of singer Louise Rutkowski, former Levitation and then current Dark Star bass player Laurence O’Keefe and string arranger Audrey Riley. The band was founded by 4AD Records owner Ivo Watts-Russell and was something of a continuation of the This Mortal Coil project, but with a fixed line-up and focused on cover versions. The band released two albums …smile’s OK in 1998 and Underarms (featuring vocals by Momus’ Nick Currie) in 1999, with the band splitting that year following Watts-Russell’s retirement from the music industry.
