I was living in New York City when Kristin’s album Sky Motel was released. I bought the CD at the Virgin Megastore, walked across the street to Union Square Park, and made sure the batteries in my Discman were fresh for repeated plays. As I sat on the bench in the park I was teleported somewhere new and unexpected. Her voice was both honed and delicate, the guitar chords warm and bright. I returned to Virgin Megastore and bought the remaining discography of Kristin’s solo work. Her Strings EP contains a song written by her father: “Uncle June and Aunt Kiyoti.” I hold Kristin’s work with the deepest reverence, yet her father’s song is the one I always return to.
